OnApp Adds VMware NSX Support to Cloud Platform
MSPs, telcos, and enterprises will benefit from SDN capabilities
OnApp is bringing support for VMware’s NSX software-defined networking (SDN) technology to its eponymous cloud management platform for MSPs, telecommunications companies, and enterprises.
The Lowdown: The support for NSX expands OnApp’s work with VMware. Clouds based on VMware’s vCenter and vCloud Director tools already can leverage the OnApp platform to make cloud management easier and more automated.
The Details: Through the OnApp platform, organizations running vCenter and vCloud Director can automate cloud orchestration, provisioning, templates, packages, user management, and metering through a single portal. With support for NSX, users can also more easily bring SDN to cloud services through the user interface. They can manage firewalls, load balancing, and VPN services, and cloud operators can develop rules and services within the same interface using IP helpers and wizards.
Initially, London-based OnApp will support VMware’s NSX-V, which is specific to the vSphere hypervisor and requires the use of vCenter. The vendor will later add support for NSX-T, which is designed for heterogeneous environments with multiple hypervisors and platforms, enabling VMware network virtualization for KVM, Docker containers, Kubernetes, OpenStack, and Amazon Web Services-native workloads.
Background: The support for NSX, announced this week at VMware’s VMworld show in Barcelona, comes a week after OnApp unveiled its Cloud Platform-as-a-Service (CPaaS) offering, which gives service providers and enterprises a complete cloud platform for running private, public, or hybrid cloud services.
