Veritas Pushes Data Protection to the Edge
Flex 5150 appliance designed for sites with limited space and IT resources
Veritas Technologies is bringing enterprise-class data protection to edge environments, where more of the data for businesses is being generated.
The Lowdown: The company this week introduced the Flex 5150, an appliance that will be available before the end of the year and will deliver Veritas’ NetBackup data backup and recovery software to the edge as well as branch and remote offices.
The Details: The new hardware comes at a time when the enterprise IT environment is becoming more distributed, a trend that’s expected to accelerate with the continued expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the adoption of 5G networking capabilities in devices and carrier networks.
The Flex 5150 is a fully functional NetBackup offering designed for locations with limited space and IT resources and will provide enterprise-level data protection at the edge. It will integrate with NetBackup environments in core data centers and in the cloud via a containerized architecture.
The appliance also comes with remote management that includes automated policies.
The Impact: The Flex 5150 is part of a larger industry-wide effort to push more compute, storage, virtualization, and analytics capabilities out to the edge, closer to where the data is being generated to more quickly derive useful information from the data and to reduce the network costs involved in moving data from the edge to the cloud and data centers.
Gartner analysts are predicting that by 2022, more than half of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside of the data center or cloud.
The Buzz: “Trends such as 5G and IoT are leading to a more decentralized IT infrastructure. And while the need for data to always be available and protected, no matter where it lives, is not going away, ‘how’ this gets done needs to adapt in light of these trends,” said Phil Brace, executive vice president of storage solutions at Veritas. “The Flex 5150 is an exciting first step in extending the reach of the Enterprise Data Services Platform beyond just the data center and the cloud. This simple, container-based appliance is designed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of protecting data at the edge, without needing dedicated IT staff to do it. This saves time and money, and reduces the risks of any downtime.”
“Untrained IT staff, outdated infrastructures, and changing business environments have been longstanding challenges in establishing data protection for remote and branch offices,” said Phil Goodwin, research director at IDC. “The Flex 5150 appliance allows businesses to upgrade their backup infrastructure and troubleshoot these problems by eliminating the need for onsite IT expertise, and provides an adaptable tool for today’s dynamic market.”
