Hitachi Vantara Puts Focus on DataOps
Launches solutions and services for storage, cloud, and data management
Hitachi Vantara this week is rolling out new and enhanced storage, cloud services, and services aimed at helping enterprises better store, migrate, manage, and analyze the growing amounts of data they’re generating.
The Lowdown: The subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Hitachi Ltd. made the announcements at its Hitachi Next 2019 show in Las Vegas, adding that the solutions and services are key parts of its push around DataOps, the cross-section of data management and artificial intelligence (AI) aimed at improving how organizations use their data.
The Details: The new offerings from Hitachi Vantara touch on a number of key areas in enterprise-class technology, including:
> Next-generation storage: The Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) 5000 Series is the company’s fastest storage array that also runs the new Hitachi Ops Center management software and updated Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System. The VSP 5000 Series includes such modern technologies as NVMe and storage-class memory and leverages the new Hitachi Accelerator Fabric, creating a fast NVMe flash array. It delivers up to 21 million IOPS and response times as low as 70 microseconds. The solution also uses machine learning algorithms for its deduplication optimizer.
> Cloud services: The new offerings are the first for Hitachi Vantara’s new cloud services portfolio, the fruit from the company’s acquisition of REAN Cloud in 2018. The services are around cloud migration, application modernization, operations managed services, consulting, and Hitachi Enterprise Cloud. They’re designed to help enterprises accelerate their use of multicloud and hybrid cloud environments.
> Data management: Hitachi Vantara is expanding the capabilities of its Lumada portfolio beyond the Internet of Things (IoT) for enterprises and industrial organizations. This includes Lumada Data Services, which lets organizations more cost-effectively manage structured and unstructured data in the data center, cloud, and edge, and Lumada Data Lake, which is designed to intelligently put data sets in the best location. In addition, Lumada Edge Intelligence is a combination of software and hardware to enable data analytics at the network edge for such uses cases as IoT, branch offices, and immersive experiences.
Background: Hitachi continues to expand the reach of the Vantara subsidiary, which was created in 2017 when the company combined its IT business (Hitachi Data Systems), data analytics unit (Pentaho), and IoT business (Hitachi Insight Group). The company last month combined Vantara and its Hitachi Consulting subsidiary to extend its reach in IoT.
The Buzz: “The Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform 5000 series is the proving ground for our customers to gain a digital advantage over their competition and achieve better business outcomes,” said Brad Surak, chief product and strategy officer at Hitachi Vantara. “Hitachi Vantara is delivering the foundation for modern enterprise infrastructure innovations that our customers require, with new solutions that are engineered using future-proof technology to take on the data center challenges of tomorrow.”
“Today’s customers are looking for high performance and scalability without compromise on agility or resiliency. The new Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) 5000 series allows us to deliver against those demands and more,” said Scott Webb, storage practice manager at World Wide Technology. “With Hitachi VSP 5000, customers can solve business problems across any workload, application, and now, infrastructure.”
“Hitachi Vantara has been a trusted partner to help Conagra Brands modernize our data center operations,” said Matt Bouges, enterprise IT architect at Conagra Brands. “The latest Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform, combined with the new Hitachi Ops Center and latest storage virtualization operating system, delivers the performance and efficiencies we need to reduce the time and money we spend running IT while accelerating IT’s time to value, helping grow the business.”
“At the center of any company’s digital transformation is a data and workload shift that changes how they connect with customers, develop new revenue sources, and improve operational efficiencies. These transformations are driving the need for more all-encompassing application modernization strategies, more timely application and data migration initiatives, and more effective adoption and ongoing use of new cloud infrastructure options,” said Rick Villars, vice president for IDC’s Datacenter and Cloud group. “A solution portfolio like Hitachi Vantara’s that spans across all three – modernization, migration, and sustained innovation in cloud infrastructure – will be essential for companies that want to achieve their digital transformation goals.”
“We’ve been leveraging several technologies from Hitachi Vantara to make sense of our complicated data landscape,” said Colin Chatelier, manager of storage and compute at Rabobank. “With Lumada Data Services, we’re excited to pool this information into a single platform that allows us to deliver the right data to the right place at the right time, maximizing the return on investment for our data-driven business.”
