Cloud Giants Embrace SAP Cloud Initiative
Amazon Web Services, Google, and Microsoft sign up to support Project Embrace, SAP’s effort to accelerate cloud migrations
Looking to accelerate adoption of its S/4HANA in the cloud, SAP enlisted top cloud computing service providers — AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure — as well as other global service providers, for its Project Embrace, aimed at developing frameworks and systems to accelerate enterprise cloud adoption and migration.
The Lowdown: Through Project Embrace, SAP seeks to work with cloud service providers and enablement partners to aid enterprises in the adoption of cloud services that leverage SAP’s software language and resources. SAP and its collaborators want to create more platforms, software, services, and infrastructure that automate and power the next generation of business applications and processes.
The Details: Each of the primary Project Embrace participants is taking a slightly different approach to its involvement in the SAP initiative. All share the same common goal of documenting processes, providing customers with migration frameworks, and enabling SAP software to run on their respective cloud platforms.
Microsoft, a longtime rival of SAP in the enterprise software market, is probably making the largest commitment to Project Embrace. In addition to opening Azure to SAP software and development tools, Microsoft and SAP agreed to run their respective applications in their internal operations. Microsoft will connect SAP S/4HANA to its internal financial and business analytics and AI applications. Correspondingly, SAP is migrating a number of its business-critical applications and functions to Azure.
Google is following a similar development and implementation path as Microsoft, including the development of frameworks for partners and customers to ease the adoption of S/4HANA and SAP cloud applications. Additionally, Google is offering credits to cloud customers to ease the financial burden of adopting and migrating to cloud services.
Through Project Embrace, AWS says it will also develop migration paths and frameworks for SAP customers to leverage its cloud platform for machine learning, data lakes, and Internet of Things implementations.
The Impact: SAP is working to transform itself into a cloud software and development platform provider, enabling independent software vendors to leverage its core applications and engines to create new cloud-based services. By working with the major cloud providers through Project Embrace, SAP could succeed in creating new and better pathways for cloud adoption, migration, and value-add services.
The Buzz: “As technology transforms every business and every industry, organizations are looking for the right platforms and trusted partners to help accelerate their digital transformation,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “Building on our longtime partnership, Microsoft and SAP are harnessing each other’s products to not only power our own organizations, but to empower our enterprise customers to run their most mission-critical applications and workloads with SAP S/4HANA on Azure.”
“We are taking our partnership to the next level with this new capability to run SAP S/4HANA in the Microsoft Azure environment,” said SAP CEO Bill McDermott. “The world’s significant businesses trust Microsoft and SAP. Together, we will help companies win the customer-driven growth revolution.”
“We are running one of the largest SAP HANA business warehouses on Azure for our own business, giving us the reliability, performance, and agility we need for our mission-critical financial reporting systems,” said Accenture Chief Technology and Innovation Officer Paul Daugherty. “Accenture is excited to help our clients take advantage of this powerful cloud foundation from Microsoft and SAP to transform their businesses at speed and scale in the cloud.”
“SAP’s Intelligent Enterprise portfolio and AWS Cloud services, with co-innovated automation, are enabling enterprises around the globe to quickly transform themselves to become ‘start-up-like’ — using intelligent technologies natively, innovating business models faster, serving their customers globally by default, and running at the lowest cost,” wrote Bas Kamphuis, general manager of AWS’ Strategic ISV program, in a blog. “Together, SAP and AWS are building a set of unique offerings aimed at retiring the technical debt that exists in today’s IT landscapes and at accelerating innovation by providing instant and on-demand access to higher-level services like machine learning, data lakes, and IoT.”
“Every enterprise customer is different, which can mean each has their own unique journey to the cloud when it comes to migrating SAP applications. As part of SAP’s Project Embrace, we’ve teamed up to simplify this journey by offering customers market-approved journeys that define industry-specific best practices tied to reference architectures underpinned by SAP Cloud Platform and GCP services that guide them through their transformation to S/4HANA,” wrote Snehanshu Shah, managing director for SAP at Google Cloud, in a blog. “These solutions will help customers modernize and create experiences using 100% VM-based, highly secure, and highly available Google Cloud infrastructure as well as the latest advances in the areas of Big Data, analytics, and machine learning.”
