New toolkit will embed IoT data into business processes for better insights, new apps

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, enterprise software heavyweight SAP flashed new integration capabilities for its Leonardo IoT platform. The additions allow users to combine data from a variety of connected and embedded devices — machines, products, supply chains, consumers, and partners — with business process data to improve intelligence and application development.
The Lowdown: As part of the Leonardo IoT boost, SAP is working with Microsoft to allow users to leverage the Azure IoT Hub for connectivity and device management. A version of Leonardo IoT for edge devices gives user the option to extend support for business processes locally on top of Microsoft Azure IoT Edge runtime. Essential business function (EBF) modules based on SAP Leonardo IoT Edge are also planned to run in containers on Microsoft Azure IoT Edge in an effort to reduce issues around latency, bandwidth, and connectivity, officials said.
The Details: Customers can use SAP’s Leonardo IoT in three ways:
• By combining IoT data with business-process data from SAP’s HANA ERP and CRM applications, as well as its SuccessFactors , Ariba, and Digital Supply Chain offerings.
• By extending existing SAP IoT applications for better business value.
• By using the Leonardo IoT toolkit to build new, intelligent IoT apps with unique and differentiated features.
