Veritas says Carbonite’s endpoint services fill enterprise customers’ need for cloud-based backup

Veritas Technology, a major provider of software for data backup to traditional media and cloud-based infrastructure, will now distribute and resell Carbonite’s cloud-based endpoint backup services, even though it offers similar products.
The Lowdown: Veritas says its enterprise customers are seeking high-quality, reliable cloud-based backup services. In Carbonite, Veritas has a partner to provide enterprises with the cloud backup services they need.
The Details: Specifically, Veritas will resell Carbonite Endpoint, a cloud-based file-level backup service for personal computers, laptops, and tablets. Carbonite says the service is appropriate for businesses of any size.
The go-to-market strategy for Veritas and Carbonite is unknown at this time. Channelnomics requested additional information from Veritas, but did not receive a response as of this publication.
On paper, the Veritas-Carbonite partnership is questionable. Veritas offers similar services to its customers through products such as Backup Exec and Desktop and Laptop Options. While Veritas doesn’t offer cloud-based backup services similar to Carbonite’s, its software enables customers to store and recover files, folders, and workloads in any cloud of their choice.
The Impact: Carbonite is making major moves to expand and grow its business. While growing nearly 20 percent annually and having a substantial reseller and service provider channel, Carbonite serves SMBs and the midmarket. Partnering with Veritas, which competes with the likes of StorageCraft, Veeam, and Commvault, will give it entree into the enterprise market.
Background: Carbonite bought Webroot last week in an all-cash deal worth $618 million as it tries to reshape itself as an endpoint protection provider.
Veritas is still rebuilding itself two years after splitting from Symantec. At its peak, Veritas generated more than $2 billion in annual revenue. Today, as a private company, Veritas generates less than $500 million by some estimates.
